Case 3

In the ER

When you get to the Emergency Room, there are many people who come in and out of your room. It feels like a whirlwind of strangers. You wish that you had asked your friend to come with you.

Different doctors and nurses insert needles into your arms and listen to your heart and lungs.

One very young looking doctor manages to get a Spanish interpreter on an iPad, and they ask you what's been going on.

You tell them that you haven't slept well recently, and that over the last few weeks, you've noticed a tingling in your hands and feet. You are hungry all the time, thirsty all the time, and always tired. You have to get up to go to the bathroom two or three times in the middle of the night. But, because you didn't have health insurance, you couldn't afford the added costs of visiting the doctor.

One of the doctors asks you whether or not you are documented. You want to lie, but are worried he'll ask for proof.

What do you say?
