Case 2

Victim of Abuse/Assault

You fill out the intake form to see the doctor, siting "Abuse/Assault" as your chief complaint. It will be seven days before you can see the doctor.

As you wait consultation, though, the CBP officer who harassed you shows up at your cell. The form you filled out is in his hand. He tells you that one of his coworkers gave him the form, and that you would face consequences for trying to report the incident to the doctor.

He drags you to solitary confinement, you'll be there for two weeks, he says.

Your thoughts eat you alive in the dark, windowless cell. You stop eating all together. You stop sleeping. You lose track of time. All you can think about is how you've failed your family, how your daughters will never get the education that they deserve, how your wife will continue to go hungry. How if you die, they will not even know what has happened to you.

When the CBP officers come to retrieve you two weeks later, you are emaciated, on the brink of death.
