Case 2

Detention Doc

The doctor in the detention facility is very kind. She opens up the conversation with you an incredibly sensitive way, and you feel comfortable telling her about what's been happening since you got to detention. She tells you that she will do everything in her power to advocate for you, and before she examines you, she listens intently to everything that you have to say.

She asks about your family, about your hopes for coming to the U.S. She asks about your mental health and emotional well being. She asks you if you feel safe. But, she also gives you permission to refuse to answer if you want to talk about something at a later time.

You don't tell her everything, but you tell her about the CBP officer who harassed you. You tell her about your daughters. You tell her that their future depends on your work, and how guilty you feel that you haven't sent any money home.

She comforts you.
