Journey

Case 2

Family!

Your eyes well up with tears at the sound of your wife's voice. You tell her that you're in detention, awaiting entry to the United States, and that it may be some time before you can send money home.

She tells you not to worry, that she's just happy you are safe. She calls for your daughters, and suddenly their voices -- full of joy and laughter fill your ears.

You ask them how they've been getting by, and your wife tells you that it's been difficult to make ends meet. She goes every few days without food to make sure that your daughters are growing. Right now, they're surviving mostly on corn, but they're still surviving.

She asks you about your journey, but you can't bring yourself to tell her about it. Not now. Not yet. Maybe not ever. As soon as you find a way to get funds, you'll call her, you say.

Understanding that it may be a while before she hears from you again, she tells you that she loves you. And makes you promise her that you'll stay safe. With that, your $1 of phone time comes to an end, and the server hangs up for you.

What now?
